    I work in IT
    I have loads of passwords.
All of your templates have way too much information that is not appropriate for my needs.
Could you make a very simple template I could then add fields I could add to as needed?
    Like
    Account name, username, and password.
That would be great and almost anything can be built from there.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Jim,

I am designing a Free Note template that will allow users to add their custom fields to fulfill their very specific needs. In addition, I am also designing a System Admin template that would be suitable for IT professionals to store data such as Unix or database system logins.

I have in the past considered your app, and once again was looking to purchase. I have so many passwords and sensitive data, that I need a ‘go-to’ place to store all of them. With that being said, the auto-sync to Dropbox was the turn off for me. Dropbox offers no privacy or security. Once your files go on to their server, you lose all your rights to your data, and then they own it. That might be okay for an essay for school or some notes, but defiantly not with sensitive password and credit card data.

So, if I was to purchase this app, is there anyway that I can make sure that it will NOT update to Dropbox? I don’t want my files anywhere near those people. Also, if I can turn it off, is there a way for me to email or send the files from the app to where ever I want? Say an email or something? I have my own dedicated server and my own cloud based software to ensure I still own my own files. If I can export the data from the app to an email, then I can simply update it to my own cloud system.

This app looks amazing and considering your relation to NotesPlus, I know it has to be quality. Again, sorry, but the Dropbox thing is scary. If anyone doubts my remarks on Dropbox, simply read their ToS…it clearly outlines that you no longer own your files once they have a hold of them.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Korri,

The Dropbox Backup/Restore feature is not automatic. You are in total control whether you want to backup your data to Dropbox and when you want to do that. So if you don’t want to backup to Drobox, the app will NOT do it automatically.

Also, the backup file is encrypted.

      Regards,
      Hung

  3. martcol says:

I am considering your app. I want to know is there a way to access stored data from a desktop using Dropbox or must you have your iPhone with you.

    Thanks

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Martcol,

You have to use the app to access the data you have backed up to your Dropbox account. Master Key app is currently available for iPhone/iPad only, so you cannot access stored data from a desktop.

      Regards,
      Hung

  4. Josh says:

I’ve noticed that some of the fields are configured strangely. I don’t have a list of all of them right now, but I know the username/password fields start with the keyboard shifted. Some have autocorrect enabled (I think the URL field, maybe).

Also.. An export feature at the very least. Import would be nice, but export is definitely great. Are there any steps to decode the Dropbox file and dump the data from it? I don’t like being trapped, though I have no plans to quit using this great app :)

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Josh,

I have noticed that once you edited the item name, the other fields will start with the keyboard shifted. It is being fixed right now. For some of the fields that you think configured strangely, would you send me a list of all of them and let me know what you expect they should be configured?

The backup file in Dropbox is encrypted, so it can’t be decoded to dump the data. I will consider the export feature.

Thank you for choosing Master Key app to manage all your sensitive information.

      Regards,
      Hung

      • Josh says:

I’ll let you know if I find any strange fields — just thought I’d mention that it’s happened before in case anyone else has seen it and can chime in.

I’m aware that the Dropbox backup is encrypted, but it certainly can be decoded.. somehow the app itself manages to do that ;)

I’m simply wondering how one’s password is encoded so that, given I know my password, I could run it through an AES decryptor on my laptop or something similar.

      • Josh says:

I found a field that misbehaves. As I’d suspected, the URL field in an Online Account. Tap the field so that you’re inserting text after the http:// part and type ‘teh’. Autocorrect begins to suggest ‘the’.

  5. Vincent says:

Thank for a very useful app. Am I alone in thinking that I would like to have this on my iMac too? Once again thank you.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Vincent,

Actually, You are not alone in this. A few other users have expressed that they would like a version for Mac as well. However, it is an option for the future. I am currently focusing on adding more features for iDevice only. Please keep visiting this support page to learn about upcoming updates or let me know if you would like me to send you an email notification when a new update is awaiting to be released.

  6. Rick says:

To store all the types of information I’d like to store with this app, I used to keep a password-protected word document. It worked well enough, but I don’t think it is as safe. I understand the benefits of having the app on my iphone/ipad, and of being able to backup/restore with dropbox. But I have two questions:

    1) What’s wrong with doing managing the way I used to, with a password-protected Word doc? (I can imagine the answer, but I’d rather hear it from an expert)

    2) Is there any other type of data entry for everything? I’d rather import from Excel or at least have a computer app that lets me do the data entry with a keyboard instead of the iPhone or iPad.

thanks in advance for your help!

    Rick

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Rick,

First of all, I’d like to thank you for choosing Master Key app to manage all your sensitive information. Like you, I used to manage all my passwords differently. I used Excel to help me remember all my passwords. I can share with you all the frustrations I faced that pushed me to develop Master Key app.

      1. It was not always there when I need it. I kept the document on my desktop, but many times, I needed it when I was on my laptop away from home, or my computer at work. If I kept the document on all computers, then I had hard times syncing them. It did not work out well. Now with the app always on my device with me, it is really there when I need it.
      2. It was not really secured. I found myself opening the document to look up a password, used it and continued with whatever I was doing, forgot about closing the document many times. I consider myself to be a careful person, but still, sometimes I just forget things. With Master Key on my device, if I forgot to close the app, the device will go to sleep mode, then it requires me to enter the password again to open the app. Also, everything is encrypted.
      3. It was hard for me to organize. Every type of account requires different pieces of information to make it meaningful. I found myself leaving the unused fields blank, and it really annoyed me. That’s why Master Key has different fields for different item type, and it allows users to add custom fields for each item to fit their needs. Also, I’d like to organize different accounts into categories so that it’s easy to look up when I need it. That’s why Master Key allows users to organize items into categories. Furthermore, with the Favorite functionality, you can view your most frequently access items with only a touch of a button. Truly convenient!
      4. While developing Master Key app, I found the need to backup my information and restore it later in case anything happens to my device or to transfer to another device. So I added Dropbox Backup/Restore capability. Not to mention that I can also use Dropbox to recover my password if I ever forgot it. I can’t do that with an Excel document.

Everyone might have slightly different reasons not to use MS document to manage their passwords but to use this app, however, I think it all comes down to those basic things that makes it hard to do so. If you don’t mind, please share yours.

I am currently working on adding more item types and icon selection capability for each item. I think you’re gonna love it. I will post the details very soon. I am not focusing on adding Excel import functionality currently. However, I will keep that in mind for the future.

      Regards,
      Hung

  7. Ken says:

I’ve lost forgotten my pass-code. Is there any way of retrieving it?

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Ken,

If you have backed up your pass-code to your Dropbox account before then you can retrieve it. Otherwise, you have re-install the app and start over. If you have backed up data to your Dropbox account then you can restore everything without re-entering everything again.

The Dropbox Backup/Restore (for both data and password retrieval) features are very helpful, so please take advantage of it.

      Regards,
      Hung

  8. Jesse says:

Hello, I really like this app. I have to keep a notebook hidden of all my passwords for use at my desk. This app helps me store them much more securely and I have them with me on the go. Thanks.

This may have already been asked but would it be possible to integrate a password strength evaluator into the password entry field? This would help ensure all my passwords are strong.

I know in some instances I think a password is strong enough but then I get a fail from a strength evaluator. I think this would be a nice feature to have. Strength could also be display on the item list page so that you can easily check the health of my passwords.

I know in the past I have been in a hurry to create/recreate a password and have used something rather weak with the intention of going back and changing it later, only to forget and never do it.

    Sorry for the long post.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Jesse,

Thank you for your suggestion. I will consider adding a password evaluator to indicate how strong a password is.

      Regards,
      Hung

  9. Brad says:

I have the app on both my iPhone and my iPad. Does the app not share data between devices. If it does, what am I doing wrong, if it doesn’t, why not.

    Thanks

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Brad,

You can use Dropbox free service to backup from one device, and then restore to the other device to share data between devices.

      Regards,
      Hung

  10. chris r says:

hi when I use the dropbox backup feature how is my information stored on dropbox? Is it encrypted, and if so to what level of security?
    Thanks

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Chris,

When using Dropbox Backup feature, your information is encrypted using AES 256 encryption technology.

      Regards,
      Hung

  11. Merv says:

When I open the program on my IPhone it takes me directly to the first screen showing “My Vault.” Why does it not ask for my pass word.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Merv,

By not forcing you to set a password before even interacting with the app, you can familiarize yourself with the app until you are ready. After you set your password, the app will ask you to enter your password every time you open it.

You can set your password by tapping the lock icon on the upper left corner. You can also set your password through the Settings screen. To access the Settings screen, tap the tool icon on the lower left corner.

      Regards,

      • Merv says:

Thanks for the info, but it still doesn’t work. I have reset the password several times but still wants to open in :MY Vault.”

        • Hung Tran says:

          Hi Merv,

Would you provide more details of what you did to reset the password, step by step, and what happen at each step? If you could capture screen shots, that would be great. I need more information to trouble shoot the problem.

          Regards,
          Hung

  12. oh – you might want to tweak the colors on this site. :-) something a little lighter. The dark colors make it seem kind of depressing. It should feel easy and breezy. just a thought. No major redesign needed, but something friendlier would be more positive.

  13. Another feature you should add. In the main view where you can tap the eye to view/hide the password. You should have a “copy” function so that we can copy the password to then paste into the actual place we are going to use it. Otherwise … we have to retype manually.

    • Clifford says:

      hello Hung, David,

The cut and paste feature to easily copy data like long card number or passwords from MasterKey to another app or website entry field would be gold for me. Once this feature is implemented correctly to allow a smooth user experience I’ll buy this app and start recommending it to friends and co-workers.

Also there is a question of security, how can we be sure you are not uploading any userdata to your servers, I’ve heard that some apps upload user contacts/address books to their servers…

      Kind regards
      Clifford.

      • Hung Tran says:

        Hi Clifford,

I am wrapping up development for this long overdue update which includes many requested features. After this big update, I will provide the Copy/Paste feature next. It won’t be long.

Everything you enter into Master Key app will only be saved on your device, encrypted. It also provides an option to erase all data once password was entered incorrectly a certain number of times. The app does not upload data to any servers. Do you know of a way to prove that the app actually does not upload data to any servers?

        Regards,
        Hung

  14. Definitely want to reiterate that I’d like more visible space for the password in the quick view. Syncing would be helpful between iPhone and iPad. Interface is a little clunky but serviceable. Many more category and item types would be helpful I will continue to use and look forward to your next upgrade. Any idea when you’ll be ready?

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi David,

I am working on adding more item templates. I’ll keep you posted when it’s near the release date.

      Regards,
      Hung

  15. Josh says:

A couple of user experience things..

    1. Would you consider adding swipe to delete? Like the Notes app, Mail, etc.

    2. When entering the password, what do you think of changing the entry field itself to something you can tap… instead of having to figure it that we need to touch the thumb in the lower right? It’d be more obvious and look quite a bit cooler to see the entry field switch to an “enter” button. Maybe it flips around or something visually appealing.

Anyway — thanks for your very cool app! It’s one of my staples now.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Thanks for your comments, Josh.

It’s obvious that you have examined the app very thoroughly. Please keep on giving me feedback as you see needed.

      Regards,
      Hung

  16. Josh says:

I’m getting some fairly mysterious crashes involving custom fields.
There appear to be a few different ways to trigger it, but here’s a reproducible one:

    1. From hierarchical view, click ‘+’ and add a new item.
    2. Choose any type of item.
    3. Add a custom field of any type.
    4. Tap to edit the field.
    5. Tap to delete the field.
    6. Delete the field.
    7. Crash

    Here’s another way:
    1. From hierarchical view, click ‘+’ and add a new item.
    2. Choose any type of item.
    3. Tap to edit a field that has some pre-filled info.
    4. Tap again to select the entire field.
    5. Copy the selection.
    6. Add a custom field of any type.
    7. Tap to edit the field.
    8. Tap again (to bring up the paste option)
    9. Crash

    Happy hunting :)

  17. Josh says:

Minor Interaction Bug: can’t add things in flat view.
I guess it’s because of a question of the new item’s parent, but how about defaulting to whatever “My Vault” is, from the hierarchical view? It might be a bit more work, but maybe a dialog (similar to the move dialog) that asks for the parent location? It’s kind of annoying not being able to add from that view.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Josh,

In Flat View, the app does not know what category the new item will belong too. That’s the app does not allow add new item in Flat View. It is possible to use a default category or force users to select a category when adding new item in Flat View, but I just think I might cause some confusions for users.

Using “My Vault” as the default category seems to be a viable option. I will consider it more carefully to see if I can allow that option without causing any confusions.

      Regards,
      Hung

  18. Mike says:

In a future release, can you add some basic international support.

For example, add support for international dialling (allow to put in “+” before international dial code e.g. +353 for ireland, +33 for France etc…)

Also the ability to display the Date in DD/MM/YYYY format for users in Europe.

Great app, but just finding some “international” restrictions when updating my info :)

    Many thanks.

    • Hung Tran says:

Thanks Mike for your comments. I will look into adding more support for international in the future.

      Regards,
      Hung

  19. Mike says:

Like many other users, would love to be able to change images/icons (as current images are US centric).

Other template suggestion: reward(loyalty) cards/frequent traveller

Also, main item for me (although probably pushing out the originally intended scope of the app) would be the ability to store scanned images with ability to email (for example, scanned copy of my passport). Would be good to have all in one place with my other secure items.

    Love the app!!

  20. Merv says:

I have just purchased your app and downloaded, and am feeling my way around it. Just one question at the moment, how do I delete a complete entry say in the Financial section ?
    Thanks

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Merv,

An entry in the Tree View listing can be either a Category or an Item. You can delete either categories or items, but not both at the same time. To completely delete the Financial category, you can follow these steps:

+ Tap on the Edit button (Pen Icon) on the bottom right.
+ Tap on the circle icon to the left of the Financial category to select it.
+ Tap on the Delete button (Trash Icon) on the bottom left.
+ Tap Delete to delete it.

      Regards,
      Hung

  21. German says:

    Hi Hung,
I bought this app because your brother recommended it, and because I have notes+ i know your apps develop into super apps. good job. Anyway I’d like to see templates for loans (personal, car, etc) thanks

  22. Is there a way to import the data I entered in my iPhone version to my iPad version? I hope in a future upgrade you will include a sync option.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi David,

You can first backup to Dropbox from your iPhone, then restore from Dropbox to your iPad.

      Regards,
      Hung

  23. I found another item type that would be useful. An investment account, like Etrade.

Also, since people have a lot of online accounts, it would be great it we could moderately customize the icon that appears with each to help differentiate them. Color? Basic symbols? Such as a music symbol for a music login like Pandora, etc.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi David,

Thank you for your suggestion. Icon customization is one of the items on my development road map.

      Regards,
      Hung

  24. Scott Tiehen says:

    Hung,
I am interested in purchasing your app but have a questions first, I have a large spreadsheet already developed containing all my important account information (url, usernames, passwords etc…) Can this be imported into Master Key so I don’t have to manually do it?

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Scott,

The data structures are different so it’s not possible to import a spreadsheet document into Master Key. However, I think it’s worth taking your time to organize your sensitive information into Master Key. Once you’ve done that, you can backup to Dropbox and will never loose it. Also, everything is encrypted so it’s safe.

I hope you will find Master Key useful in managing all your sensitive information. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or suggestions regarding the app.

      Regards,
      Hung

      • Josh says:

Another happy customer here — another fan of your brother.

Scott’s concern is totally legitimate, though I wouldn’t expect his specific format to be directly importable, is there any chance we could get you to consider *some* kind of import/export format? PLIST, JSON, XML, CSV, whatever.. something reasonable and extensible would be nice.

This app is beautiful, simple, and functional — and I’ve noticed that you’ve got an eye on making even more improvements. I’ll continue to use the application, though you’d make me a gratefully loyal user by permitting an easy way to get data in and out. I’ll stay by choice; happily if I don’t have to worry about using something which I can’t get my data out of.

It’s polite future- and past- proofing :)

        • Hung Tran says:

          Hi Josh,

I certainly can provide an import/export option using XML format. I just don’t know how comfortable users are regarding editing an XML file.

To all Master Key users, if you would like this option, please let me know so that I have an idea of how users feel about editing an XML file.

          Regards,
          Hung

    • Josh says:

      Scott –

+1 on the spirit of this request.

Do you have the means to transform your spreadsheet into a given input format if one were available? If your data is uniform, then it’d be very simple to turn it into the required format. I’ll write you one in Python if you can’t… I mean, provided Hung comes through :)

  25. Hi Hung,

I just purchased your app and started using it. You asked if we had any new Item types we would have you add. I would like the following types that I need:

    Frequent Flier numbers
Other ID numbers (like ID badge numbers or Car rental numbers)
    WIFI name & Password

Here’s something bothers me – on the credit card view with the eye that reveals passwords – that space is rather limiting. Even though the data is encrypted, i feel more comfortable using shortcut language that reminds me of the what the password is and in some cases it doesn’t fit in the visible space. I have to hit the edit button to see the information. I’d prefer if your layout wasn’t so restrictive or expanded down if the password is longer than the fixed space.

Also, i think you should add an in-app support link that would allow us to conveniently email you from the app if we are having an issue.

That’s it for now. i’m just starting to plug my data in so i’ll let you know what else i come across. I learned about this from your brother at Notesplus.

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi David,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. I have learned a great deal through this blog how users have used the app differently. I will take all those into consideration for future releases to make it worth your investment in Master Key app.

      Regards,
      Hung

  26. Andy says:

Can I add additional social security numbers to the app? It appears The SS# graphic can only be used once?

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Andy,

I think it would be more appropriate to create another Social Security item. I took extra effort to ensure that each field can only be used once on an item.

For some reason, if you definitely need to have another SS# on that same item, you can create a custom field for it, SSN2, for example. Master Key is really flexible that way. You can create your own field to hold data that is suitable for your need.

      Regards,
      Hung

  27. Bert says:

    Hi,

In the Dutch app store I read a comment that you can’t save all your important information , is this true?

    “Armi69″
Wenn you want to save all your in 1 app this app is too limited. You will only notice it after purchasing. Lay pout is wonderful, now just more options to save different data.”

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Bert,

You can save as much data as your device is capable of.

Currently, Master Key has seven predefined templates: Bank Account, Credit Card, Driver License, Email Account, Online Account, and Passport. I am in the process of adding more templates in future releases to accommodate users’ needs. If you have a certain type of data that you would like to have a template for it, please let me know, and I will add it to my list of templates to create.

      Regards,
      Hung

Can the DropBox backup feature be used to share a single data store between an iPhone and iPad, or between a husband and wife (who each have iPhones)?

  29. Hung Tran says:

I am happy to announce that an update for Master Key with the following great features is now available in the App Store.

+ Launch a web site by tapping on a URL.
+ Make a phone call by tapping on a Phone Number.
+ Compose an email by tapping on an Email.
+ Specify field type when creating new custom field.

If you like Master Key app, please support by going into the App Store to rate/review the app.

  30. Hung Tran says:

Master Key works for iPad now.

A few users have expressed that they want to be able to use Master Key app on their iPad as well, so I have released this mini version update, version 1.0.1, to enable it for iPad, with the same UI as iPhone.

Please do notify me if you encounter problems opening Master Key on your iPad.

Mke file type used in dropbox, what is this file type

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Johnny,

The backup file in Dropbox for Master Key app is an encrypted file, so you won’t be able to view its content. The file extension “mke” stands for “Master Key Encrypted”.

  33. RB says:

Am I not supposed to be able to click on a URL I enter (for a CC, for example) and go to that site? I’ve tried but it doesn’t work for me, so I’d appreciate some assistance, please.

And, while I’m here, let me second the request to be able to add images, just as I can with adding new contacts. Being able to add a company’s logo or adding my own image of a CC would make all the difference in the world…

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi RB,

Unfortunately, you cannot do that with the current version. I will add that functionality in future releases.

I appreciate your comment. It definitely helps to grow the app further than it is now.

      Thanks,
      Hung

  34. Ronald Baldassari says:

Would it it be possible to have a base template that could be customized with our own imported (sized to fit) backgrounds and logos.

    Thank You

    Ronald Baldassari

    • Hung Tran says:

      Hi Ronald,

Allowing users to select a provided logo for each template is on my road map for future versions. I will also consider your request to have users select their own imported logos and backgrounds for each template.

      Thanks for your input,
      Hung

This might be because the downloaded binary of the app is corrupted. You could try to remove the app and re-download it again from the App Store for free. Let me know if that works.
